Intempo: the story of Benidorm's tallest tower

Intempo's design — two towers joined near the top by a diamond-shaped, inverted-cone section near the top (around 150m up) — was unveiled in January 2006, and building began in 2007. Then the 2008 financial crisis hit. Work stalled, the structural contractor went unpaid, and the loan behind the project ended up with Sareb, Spain's "bad bank", in 2012. The developer, Olga Urbana, went into insolvency in November 2014, and the original architects withdrew in 2013 with around a fifth of the work still to do.

After an auction that failed to find a buyer, the debt was sold in 2017 to the US investment fund SVP Global, which took ownership in 2018 and brought in Uniq Residential to finish and sell it. Construction restarted in 2019 under a revised design, with Dragados as contractor, and the building was completed in July 2021. For years it was the butt of jokes, including a widely repeated story that it had been built without lifts — which was false.

Today it is the tallest building in Benidorm and among the tallest residential buildings in the European Union.

Is Intempo a hotel? Can tourists go up?

Intempo is a residential building, not a hotel. It has 256 apartments, with residents' facilities including an outdoor pool at ground level, a heated indoor pool on floor 46 and communal areas with a terrace on the top floors. Those top floors are for residents, and there is no public observation deck or ticketed visit (checked 20 Oct 2026).

The best way to see Intempo is from outside: from Poniente beach, from the Benidorm Cross on the Serra Gelada, or from the Gran Hotel Bali viewpoint.

Coming next: a 230m, 64-storey residential tower, TM Tower, was approved for Avenida de México near Poniente beach in 2025; work began in early 2026, with completion planned for the second half of 2028. If it's built as planned, it will take Intempo's title.

Gran Hotel Bali: the tallest hotel in Benidorm

The Gran Hotel Bali was Spain's tallest building when it opened in May 2002 and held that title until 2007. It was Benidorm's tallest until Intempo was finished in 2021. It's still the tallest hotel in Benidorm, and the hotel bills itself as the tallest hotel in Europe — a claim that depends on how you measure, since Moscow's Hotel Ukraina reaches 198m including its spire.

Viewpoint and Sky Bar: the hotel advertises a 360° viewpoint on the 43rd floor and a rooftop Sky Bar on the 52nd. Entry costs €10 for non-residents and €5 for hotel guests, with under-5s free; the price does not include a drink. Opening is roughly 9am–7pm, depending on season and weather (all checked 20 Oct 2026).

Staying there: 776 rooms, with "sky view" rooms on floors 22–41. It's at the far western end of Poniente, near La Cala, so you'll want the bus or a taxi for the Old Town — see buses and trams.
