Do I need travel insurance for Benidorm if I have a GHIC?

Dear Brenda

My husband and I are booked for a month's winter stay. We both have long-term health conditions, the quotes we're getting are frightening, and because of our ages some insurers will only cover a single month. Do we really need insurance if we carry our GHICs? How do we find cover for the whole stay at a sensible price? And if one of us is poorly while we're out there, where do we go?

Yes, you need both: the GHIC gets you state healthcare in Spain on the same terms as a local, but it won't pay for a private clinic or fly either of you home, and that's the bill that hurts with a long-term condition. For cover, go to a specialist medical-conditions insurer rather than the cheapest comparison quote, declare every condition, and check the maximum single-trip length against your whole stay, travel days included. Regulars in their seventies and eighties have found annual policies allowing 45, 60 or even 90 days a trip, and AllClear, Staysure and Saga are the names they mention. If one of you is poorly, ring your insurer's medical line, or go to a state health centre (Racó de l'Oix, Foietes or La Cala) with your GHIC and passport. For anything serious the public hospital is Hospital Marina Baixa in Villajoyosa, with A&E open 24 hours, and in an emergency call 112.

Who the regulars recommend

  • AllClearNamed by a couple with several pre-existing conditions for their annual cover (2025).
  • StaysureA regular says it covered his wife's condition once treatment had stabilised it (2025).
  • SagaGave an 80-year-old a 12-month policy with 90 days' continuous stay in 2025.
  • The charity for your conditionMany keep lists of insurers that understand the condition; regulars suggest asking before you shop.
  • Racó de l'Oix, Foietes and La Cala health centresState health centres that see visitors with a GHIC and passport.
  • Hospital Marina Baixa, VillajoyosaThe public hospital for Benidorm, A&E open 24 hours, on bus line 54.

Watch out for

  • Declare every condition, even ones that seem minor; an undeclared one can sink a claim.
  • Many policies won't pay if alcohol played a part.
  • Annual policies cap each trip at 30 to 90 days; count your whole stay, travel days included.
  • Never pay a third-party website for a GHIC; it's free from the NHS.
  • Some policies need theft reported to police within 24 hours.
What we've learned

What does the GHIC actually cover in Spain?

Medically necessary state healthcare, on the same terms as a Spanish resident: free or at reduced cost. A UK GHIC, or a UK EHIC that is still in date, does not cover private clinics, does not replace travel insurance and will not pay to fly you home. Prescriptions cost 50% of the price, or 10% if you get a UK State Pension. The card is free from the NHS website, so never pay a third-party site for it. If you lose it, NHS Overseas Healthcare Services on +44 191 218 1999 can issue a Provisional Replacement Certificate.

Where do I go if I'm ill?

For something routine, a state health centre. In Benidorm there are centres at Racó de l'Oix (966 816 350), Foietes (966 870 500) and La Cala (966 870 400), plus the Centro de Especialidades (966 870 200). In 2026 one visitor described turning up with a GHIC and passport: reception, then triage, then a doctor. If you want to use your insurance, ring its medical helpline first; some insurers won't name a clinic, but they'll tell you what they'll pay for. The public hospital is Hospital Marina Baixa in Villajoyosa, the next town south; A&E is open 24 hours on 966 907 235, and bus line 54 runs there from the bus station and La Cala every 30 minutes. In an emergency, call 112.

How do people find cover with a pre-existing condition?

By going to specialists and declaring everything. Prices vary enormously between insurers, so the cheapest quote on a comparison site is rarely the answer. Regulars with several conditions name AllClear for annual cover, and one says Staysure covered his wife once her condition had stabilised after treatment. Some insurers exclude a condition until it is stable. A sensible 2025 tip: ask the charity for your condition whether it keeps a list of insurers. Read the medical section before you pay.

Is there an age limit, or a limit on trip length?

Often the problem is length, not age. Several winter visitors in 2025 found annual policies that cap each trip at 30, 45, 60 or 90 days. An 80-year-old regular got a 12-month policy from Saga in 2025 with 90 days' continuous stay, and a 72-year-old found 60 days' cover with Gigasure even though its site said over-70s weren't accepted. Some insurers cover older travellers but cut certain payouts. Check the maximum single-trip length against your full stay, including travel days.

Will insurance pay out if I'd been drinking?

Often not. Regulars warn that many policies exclude claims where alcohol played a part. Theft claims have their own rules: some policies say theft must be reported to police within 24 hours, and your insurer will want the report reference. In Benidorm you can report it at the SATE office on Calle Gerona, run by the Policía Nacional with interpreters.

What if I'm staying longer or moving out?

Then holiday rules stop applying. Residence visas need full private health insurance, and moving on to Spain's state system is a separate process. In March 2026 there were reports of a new Spanish universal healthcare law, but how it applies to visitors is not settled. For anything beyond a holiday, use GOV.UK's 'Living in Spain' guidance and a qualified adviser.

What's changed lately. Quotes for older travellers with conditions have climbed, with one 2025 quote of about £3,000, but visitors who shopped around with specialist insurers often found far lower prices. They split on what's reasonable: one regular thought about £200 should cover a long-term condition, others found nothing close. Reports of a new Spanish healthcare law in March 2026 caused excitement, but for holidaymakers the GHIC plus travel insurance is still the rule.

What the regulars say

  • Carry your GHIC and passport together; clinics ask for both.
  • Declare every condition, even ones that seem minor, or a claim can fail.
  • Check the policy's maximum single-trip length against your whole stay.
  • Ask your condition's charity for a list of insurers.
  • Remember the hospital is in Villajoyosa, not Benidorm; line 54 runs there every 30 minutes.

Your other questions, answered

2026Where in Benidorm can I see a doctor on travel insurance?

Ring your insurer's medical helpline first; it will say where to go and what it pays for. Or go to a state health centre with your GHIC and passport.

2026What does Spain's new healthcare law change?

The March 2026 reports concern residents, and how it applies to visitors isn't settled. For a holiday, take your GHIC and travel insurance as before.

2025Who will insure us when my husband has Parkinson's?

Try specialist medical-conditions insurers and declare everything. Ask a Parkinson's charity whether it keeps a list of insurers.

2025How do we avoid a £3,000 quote?

Shop the specialist insurers, because prices vary enormously. Some regulars with several conditions pay a fraction of that for annual cover.

2025Insurers will only cover us for a month: how do we winter here?

Look for annual policies with longer single-trip limits: an 80-year-old got 90 days from Saga in 2025, and others found 45 or 60 days.

2024What do people pay for annual travel insurance?

A 60-year-old with no conditions paid £27 for annual Europe cover in 2024. With conditions, expect much more, and compare specialists.

2023Can we get holiday cover with pre-existing conditions?

Yes, from specialist insurers, as long as you declare everything. Some exclude a condition until it is stable.

2022Are there loopholes in travel insurance?

None worth relying on. Undeclared conditions and alcohol are the usual reasons claims fail.
