Dear Brenda · Who's going

Is Benidorm any good for a family holiday with young kids?

Dear Brenda

We're thinking of Benidorm next July with the children, the youngest just two and the eldest nearly a teenager. We've heard all about the Strip and the Square, and we're not sure that's for us with kids in tow. Which part of town suits a family? Is there enough to fill a week, even if a day turns wet? And is July simply too hot for a two-year-old?

Yes, come, but stay on Poniente or at the calmer top end of Rincón de Loix, not near the Strip and the English Square, and pick a hotel with a kids' club and an entertainment team. A week fills easily: Aqualandia and Mundomar sit side by side at the end of bus line 1, Terra Natura has its own water park, and your nearly-teenager will love Terra Mítica. A wet July day is rare, about 1.3 a month on average, but if one comes take the tram to Alicante or spend it at Mundomar. July is hot for a two-year-old, 29.9°C by day and 23.1°C at night on average, so do the pool and parks in the morning and keep to shade after lunch; if your dates can move, June or September are about 27°C and cheaper.

Who the regulars recommend

  • Mundomar and AqualandiaSide by side at the end of bus line 1: animals one day, water park the next.
  • Terra Natura and Aqua NaturaA zoo and water park on one site, from £19.85 online (14 Oct 2026).
  • Terra MíticaThe rides park visitors recommend most for children over about eight; go early for the shade.
  • RH Princesa Hotel & SpaOur top-rated hotel with a kids' club (benidorm.co.uk/hotels, 14 Oct 2026).
  • Flamingo OasisFamilies recommend it for kids' entertainment by day and shows at night.
  • Playa de PonienteThe wider, calmer beach Spanish families pick.

Watch out for

  • Theme parks can have little shade in July and August; take hats, water and go early.
  • Steer clear of the Strip and the English Square from mid-afternoon with young children.
  • Beaches are at their most crowded in August; claim your spot early or use the hotel pool.
  • Water parks are seasonal; check opening dates if you come outside summer.
  • Ask about all-inclusive wristband rules for under-18s before you book.
What we've learned

Which part of Benidorm is best for families?

Poniente or the upper end of Rincón de Loix. Families who've been most often stayed at the top of Rincón, a short walk from the action but much calmer, or along Poniente, which Spanish parents prefer because the beach is wider and quieter. Nowhere is truly quiet in August. Visitors give one simple rule: enjoy Levante in the morning and keep clear of the Strip and the Square from mid-afternoon, when the stag and hen groups get going.

Hotel or self-catering?

Both work, and more families now choose self-catering so meals and naps fit the children. If you go for a hotel, book one with an entertainment team: it keeps children busy round the pool by day and puts on shows at night. On our hotels page, 16 of the 50 hotels have a kids' club and 22 have family rooms; RH Princesa is our top-rated hotel with a kids' club, and families have praised the Flamingo Oasis for its entertainment. For a big family, the Magic Atrium apartments in the Old Town have three bedrooms.

Is there enough to fill a week?

Easily. Mundomar has sea lions, parrots and exotic animals, with Aqualandia water park next door; bus line 1 gets there about every 30 minutes for €2. Terra Natura is a zoo with its own water park, Aqua Natura, and Terra Mítica is the rides park; line 42 runs to both only five times a day, so a taxi is easier. On 14 Oct 2026 the cheapest online tickets started at £18 for Mundomar, £19.85 for Terra Natura, £24 for Terra Mítica and £34.63 for Aqualandia. Add a boat trip, a beach day on Poniente and an evening hotel show and the week is gone.

Is July too hot for toddlers?

It's hot, so plan around it. July averages 29.9°C by day and 23.1°C at night, and August 30.3°C. Parents who have done both often say they would not take a toddler in high summer again, and point to June or September: both average about 27°C, with the sea at 24°C in June and 26°C in September. Hotels were cheaper too: €127 a night in June 2026 against €153 in July. Spanish parents warn that Terra Mítica has little shade for a toddler, so save it for the older children or go early.

What if it rains?

In July it barely does: about 1.3 wet days a month on average. If you get one, take the tram along the coast to Alicante (about 80 minutes, €2.90), visit Mundomar, or book an evening show. Benidorm Palace runs on Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, with children aged 8 to 14 in for €20, but it starts at 22:00, so it suits your eldest more than your two-year-old.

Is it okay to bring an older child or teenager?

Yes. Teenagers can go into most bars with their parents, and July has fewer big stag and hen groups than some months. The legal age for buying alcohol in Spain is 18, and all-inclusive wristbands for under-18s are the hotel's call, so ask before you book. At comedy shows, sit away from the front if your teenager would hate being picked on.

What's changed lately. Visitors split on Terra Mítica in high summer: some say go, others say it's too hot for little ones. Lately more families pick self-catering and avoid the August peak, choosing June or September instead.

What the regulars say

  • Book a hotel with an entertainment team; it keeps children busy around the pool while you get a breather.
  • Treat the Strip and the Square as a daytime walk-through with little ones, or skip them.
  • Do the parks in the morning and the pool after lunch in July.
  • With teenagers at a comedy show, sit back from the front; the acts like to pick on the audience.
  • Use the local bus: line 1 runs to Aqualandia and Mundomar about every 30 minutes for €2.

Yes: the upper end of Rincón de Loix or Poniente. June averages 27°C, which is kinder to little ones than July.

Poniente: Spanish families say the beach is wider and calmer than Levante, and it's often cheaper.

2011What can we do with a two-year-old?

Mundomar's animals, the beach and the hotel pool. Spanish parents say Terra Mítica has too little shade for a toddler in July.
