How we score hotels

The Brenda score is out of 10. It is 60% the hotel's all-time rating and 40% its latest reviews, using TripAdvisor and Google together. Both parts are adjusted so a hotel with few reviews cannot jump to the top on a handful of five-star scores.

The steps

  1. All-time rating. We pool the TripAdvisor and Google ratings, weighted by how many reviews each has, and pull the result towards the Benidorm hotel average of 4.2. A hotel with few reviews is pulled more; one with thousands hardly moves (weight of 500 reviews).
  2. Recent rating. We average the latest 30 TripAdvisor reviews and the latest 30 Google reviews (up to 60) and pull that towards the hotel's own all-time rating, so a short run of good or bad reviews counts, but not too much (weight of 10 reviews).
  3. Score. 0.6 × all-time + 0.4 × recent, doubled to give a score out of 10.
  4. Trend. Recent rating minus all-time rating. Above zero, the hotel is getting better. Below zero, it is slipping.
  5. Flags. We flag a hotel when almost every recent review is five stars (a possible review push), when guests split between very good and very bad, and when there are too few recent reviews to judge (fewer than 3 in 12 months). Those hotels are left out of the ranking.
  6. Two platforms. Using TripAdvisor and Google together means one site's quirks count for less, and hotels with no TripAdvisor following still get a fair score.

Bars

Bars get the same score from Google ratings and their last 30 Google reviews, pulled towards the Benidorm bar average (weight of 200 reviews). Best bars in Benidorm.
