When and where are the markets in Benidorm?
Dear Brenda
We're staying in the Old Town in February and love a good rummage. Which days is the big outdoor market on, and is the Wednesday one in the same place as Sunday's? Is there a bus from the Old Town, or do we need a taxi? And is the indoor market better value than the outdoor one?
For you in the Old Town in February, the big outdoor market is on Wednesday and Sunday mornings, and yes, it's the same site both days: open ground near the Hotel Pueblo, above Rincón de Loix. No bus drops you at the gate, so take a taxi from the Old Town, about €6 to €8 according to visitors in 2024 and 2025; on foot it's a 20 to 25-minute walk that's awkward to follow. For everyday bits the indoor market, open Monday to Saturday, is the better value; the outdoor one is for clothes, bags, sunglasses and a good browse. And there's a smaller market right behind the Old Town, by the Foietes sports centre next to the train and tram station, which visitors found on a Wednesday in 2025.
Who the regulars recommend
- The Wednesday and Sunday outdoor market, by the Hotel PuebloThe big one: hundreds of stalls of clothes, bags, sunglasses and souvenirs, every week of the year. Go early.
- The indoor marketRegulars' pick for value on everyday things, Monday to Saturday, and it has a stall for reading glasses.
- Foietes market, behind the Old TownClosest to you, by the sports centre next to the train station; one 2025 visitor found more variety than at the big market. Check the day.
- La Cala de Finestrat Saturday marketA proper local street market, easy on bus line 3 from the Old Town edge.
- Albir (Sunday) and Altea (Tuesday) marketsRegulars call them an excellent day out on the line 10 bus, with a stroll and lunch thrown in.
Watch out for
- Branded goods on the stalls are copies. Buy them for fun, not as the real thing.
- Crowds bring pickpockets: bag zipped and in front of you, phone in a front pocket, small notes ready.
- Walk past the cup-and-ball game. It's a con, and the 'winners' are often part of the team.
- These are morning markets. Arrive after midday and stalls are packing up.
- On bank holidays (New Year's Day, 6 January, Easter) opening isn't guaranteed, so ask at your hotel the day before.
Is the Wednesday market in the same place as Sunday's?
Yes. Wednesday and Sunday, same site, close to the Hotel Pueblo, on the open ground off Avenida de l'Almirall Bernat de Sarrià. It runs rain or shine, all year round, January included. It's a morning market, roughly 9:00 to 13:00. A 2025 visitor arrived around 11:00 and found it filling up; by noon it was heaving. If you want to browse in comfort, be there by ten.
How do I get there from the Old Town?
By taxi: €6 to €8 from the Old Town or the Levante seafront in 2024 and 2025, and many taxis now take five. Walking takes 20 to 25 minutes and the route is fiddly. From the Rincón end it's easier: a 2024 visitor walked it in about 15 minutes straight up Calle Derramador. Coming back loaded with shopping, get another taxi.
Is there a market nearer the Old Town?
Yes, on the car park beside the sports centre at the top of Foietes Park, next to the train and tram station, just behind the Old Town. From Avenida del Mediterráneo, bus line 1 runs to the train station; from the tram stop it's a short walk down the hill past the school. One 2025 visitor preferred it to the big market for variety. Reports put it on a Wednesday, so check the day locally before you set off.
Is the indoor market better value?
For everyday things, yes. Several regulars say the indoor market, open Monday to Saturday, is cheaper than the big outdoor one, where they find most things dear. The outdoor market wins on atmosphere and choice of clothes, bags and sunglasses. It isn't open on Sundays, so on a Sunday the outdoor market is your only option in town.
What about La Cala, Albir and Altea?
La Cala de Finestrat has a street market on Saturdays, 8:00 to 14:30 according to a 2025 visitor; some say Tuesdays too, so check. Bus line 3 runs from the Old Town edge through Poniente to La Cala every 20 minutes, and the stop is opposite the Hotel Bristol. For a day out, regulars rate Albir's Sunday market and Altea's Tuesday market, both on line 10 from Avenida del Mediterráneo, about every 20 minutes for €2.
Are there fakes and pickpockets?
Yes to both. Copies of designer bags and watches are sold openly; one 2025 buyer watched a stallholder stick a designer label on as he sold it. Crowds bring pickpockets, so keep your bag zipped and in front of you and your phone in a front pocket. You may also see the cup-and-ball game. Benidorm council warns it's a con, not a game, so walk on by.
What the regulars say
- Get to the big market by about 10:00; by midday it's packed.
- Take small notes and keep your bag zipped and in front of you.
- Buy everyday bits at the indoor market, and save the outdoor one for a browse.
- Make a day of Albir on Sunday or Altea on Tuesday with the line 10 bus.
- Get a taxi back if you've bought heavy bits; it costs only a few euros.
