Dear Brenda · Who's going

Celebrating a big birthday in Benidorm: what should we do?

Dear Brenda

It's my husband's 60th in March and ten of us are coming, five couples. He wants something different, not just the same old bars. Will much be open in March? What should we book for one really good night out, a nice meal and a trip somewhere? And can we get flowers put in the room for when we arrive?

Book Benidorm Palace's dinner show for the birthday night itself, on a Tuesday, Thursday, Friday or Saturday, and build the rest of the week around it. Will much be open in March? Yes: the show bars run all year, and 61% of Benidorm's hotel beds were filled in March 2026, so it's lively without the summer crush. What to book: the Palace at €60 to €110 a head with dinner (the €90 Platinum adds fillet steak, cava and the VIP area), a long birthday lunch in the Old Town at Bar Mal Pas or Malaspina, and a day out to Guadalest and the Algar waterfalls from about £29 each, or Altea's old town by tram. Flowers: email your hotel a week before you fly and ask them to arrange it; visitors have had hotels do exactly that.

Who the regulars recommend

  • Benidorm PalaceThe birthday night visitors name most: a dinner show with steak, cava and a VIP area on the Platinum ticket. Tue, Thu, Fri and Sat only.
  • Bar Mal PasRustic Old Town tavern below the Mirador for a long birthday lunch of rice and seafood; bookable, closed Tuesdays.
  • MalaspinaThe smart choice on Poniente: Repsol Solete, Alicante rice and seafood. Book a lunch table, as rice is served at lunch only.
  • Cafe BenidormVisitors' favourite last stop of a big night, on the Rincón de Loix strip; it was listing tribute acts in October 2026.
  • Hotel PresidenteVisitors recommend the refurbished hotel for its location by the show bars, its pool and its entertainment.
  • Nuevo AlcazarVisitors call it an amazing restaurant with lovely grounds, a quieter special-occasion meal. Check it's still open.

Watch out for

  • Benidorm Palace has no show on Sunday, Monday or Wednesday. Fix the birthday night first.
  • For a Palace dinner ticket, be seated before 21:15 or dinner isn't served, and there's no refund.
  • Ten of you won't fit one transfer car: private transfers are priced per car for one to four people, so book a minibus or three cars.
  • March is the wettest month of the year here. Don't pin the whole celebration on an outdoor day.
  • Paella at nine at night is a tourist-menu dish. For the real thing, book lunch.
What we've learned

Will much be open in March?

Yes. March is shoulder season, not winter shutdown: the cabaret and tribute bars on Calle Gerona and in Rincón de Loix run every night, and Benidorm Palace runs its show four nights a week. In March 2026 hotels averaged €81 a room and 61% of beds were filled, so there are people about. The catch is the weather: March is the wettest month here, with rain on about 8 days in a typical year and highs around 17.7°C. Keep the day trip flexible and have an indoor plan.

What's the best birthday night out for ten?

Benidorm Palace, by a distance: it's the birthday night visitors name more than any other. The show, TRIVIUM, starts at 22:00 (22:15 on Saturday), doors open at 20:00, and you must be seated by 21:15 or dinner isn't served. A show-only ticket is €40 but your table may be shared; with ten of you, book a dinner package together so you sit as one group. The €60 Gran Palace has a pork menu; the €90 Platinum has fillet steak, cava, wine and the VIP area. On the other nights, the free cabaret bars carry the party, and Cafe Benidorm on the Rincón de Loix strip is a favourite last stop.

Where should we go for the birthday meal?

The Old Town, at lunchtime. Rice and paella are lunch dishes in the local restaurants, so a long birthday lunch beats a late dinner. Bar Mal Pas, a stone tavern below the Mirador, does rice, cuttlefish and seafood for €20 to €30 a head and takes bookings, but it's closed on Tuesdays. Malaspina, in the Mercure on Poniente, has a Repsol Solete and serves rice at lunch only, €30 to €60 a head. For a livelier group graze, walk Tapas Alley on Calle Santo Domingo in the Old Town.

What day out would make it different?

A trip inland or up the coast. Guadalest and the Algar waterfalls is the classic, from about £29 a head on a coach tour, and a full-day off-road jeep tour runs from about £68. Altea's old town, with its blue-domed church, is 15 minutes away on TRAM line 9 (hourly) or on bus 10 to the end of the line (every 20 minutes, €2). Boats to Benidorm Island leave the harbour below the Old Town from 10:00, €22 return.

How do we get flowers or a cake in the room?

Ask the hotel. Email reception a week ahead with your arrival date and room names, and ask them to arrange flowers, a cake or a bottle of cava; visitors say hotels have done it for them. If the hotel can't, visitors pointed to a florist near the Venus and Orange hotels in Rincón de Loix (check it's still open). The indoor market is open every day except Sunday if you'd rather pick your own.

Where should five couples stay?

Near the shows if he wants a party, near the Old Town if he wants a gentler week. Around Avenida Filipinas and Calle Gerona you can walk to the cabaret bars and the Palace; visitors praise the refurbished Hotel Presidente for its location and entertainment. For an Old Town feel, stay at the Levante end of the old quarter. Tell the hotel it's a 60th for five couples when you book; some limit large groups.

What's changed lately. Visitors split between one big organised night at the Palace and a free crawl round the cabaret bars; for 'something different' the day trips to Altea or the Algar waterfalls win. Lately the questions have moved from 'will anything be open?' (2021 and 2022) to 'what's special?', and the Palace's dinner packages now cost €60 to €110 against the €50 or so a head visitors reported for a dinner show in 2022.

What the regulars say

  • Book the Palace dinner as one group of ten so you're seated together.
  • Email the hotel a week ahead for flowers, a cake or cava in the room.
  • Book the birthday meal at lunchtime if you want rice or paella.
  • Take the tram to Altea: 15 minutes, and the old town is a short climb from the stop.
  • Check our What's on page the week you fly for who's on at the bars.

Your other questions, answered

2025Family 60th for about fourteen women in June: what should we book?

Book the Palace dinner show for the big night and a long lunch in the Old Town. For a group that size, ask about three- or four-bedroom apartments rather than a row of hotel rooms.

2024Can we get flowers in my niece's room for the day she arrives?

Yes: email the hotel a week ahead and ask them to arrange it. Visitors also mentioned a florist near the Venus and Orange hotels in Rincón de Loix; check it's still open.

202440th in November: will anywhere be open and busy?

Yes. 123 hotels were open in November 2025 with 63% of beds filled, and the show bars run every night. Expect highs around 19.6°C.

2024Solo 50th in December: what would make it memorable?

A Palace show (a show-only ticket shares a table, which suits a solo traveller) or a day in Altea, 15 minutes up the coast by tram. Check acts that week: some go home for Christmas from late November.

2023Big birthday for six to eight ladies after Easter: which area?

For lively, stay round Avenida Mallorca and Calle Gerona, the heart of the strip. For something gentler, the edge of the Old Town gives you tapas and the seafront in one walk.

2022Daughter's 40th in March: will the bars be open?

Yes. March is shoulder season and the cabaret bars run all week, quieter midweek than at weekends. Bring a jacket for the evenings.

2021Husband's birthday trip in early March: ideas for a day out?

Altea's old town by tram line 9 or bus 10, Guadalest and the Algar waterfalls from about £29, or an off-road jeep tour from about £68.
