Dear Brenda · Who's going

Is Benidorm safe and sociable if I travel on my own?

Dear Brenda

A relationship has just ended and I've a holiday already paid for, so I'm going on my own for the first time, in May. Is it safe walking back to the hotel at night by myself? Where do people on their own actually meet others, rather than sitting in the room? And is a week too long on my own?

Go: a week in May on your own is very doable, and plenty of people come to Benidorm for exactly the reason you are. Walking back alone at night is safe on the busy main roads, so stick to Avenida del Mediterráneo rather than quiet back streets, and pick a hotel a few minutes from where you'll spend your evenings. Most crime here is theft, not violence: about 44.5 recorded crimes per 1,000 people in town in 2025, against 84.7 per 1,000 in England and Wales. To meet people, go where company comes built in: the show bars in Rincón de Loix and Calle Gerona, afternoon quizzes, and coach trips such as Guadalest and the Algar waterfalls from about £24. And no, a week isn't too long if you book two or three days out to give it a shape.

Who the regulars recommend

  • Café Benidorm, Rincón de LoixNamed in 2026 as a friendly, trouble-free place for a night out alone; tribute shows most nights.
  • Hotel Helios BenidormRecommended by regulars for solo stays, and scoring 4.93 from its last 30 guests in October 2026; in Rincón de Loix, close to the show bars.
  • Hotel BCL Levante Club & SpaSuggested in 2024 for someone alone: plenty of bars on the doorstep, so the walk home is short.
  • Hotel BelroyA 2023 solo visitor stayed here and was happy to share a drink with others; check current reviews.
  • The Old Town barsFriendly, smaller bars and tapas; regulars say you'll get a warm welcome at night.
  • Guadalest and Algar waterfalls coach tripThe most-booked day out and the easiest way to spend a day with company, from about £24.

Watch out for

  • Walk home on the main roads, not through quiet back streets behind the clubs.
  • Some late bars around the busiest squares get rowdy after midnight. If a place feels wrong, move on.
  • Keep your phone in a front pocket and your bag on you, never on the back of a chair.
  • Buy your own drinks and keep them in sight; measures are bigger than at home.
  • Be wary of anyone a bit too friendly too quickly, and of people who crowd or distract you.
What we've learned

Is it safe walking home alone at night?

Yes, on the main roads. Regulars' advice is calm and consistent: walk back along Avenida del Mediterráneo rather than cutting through quiet side streets, and stay close to where you spend your evenings. Take out only the cash you need, keep your phone in a front pocket and your drink in sight. Most trouble here is theft; thieves look for the phone on the table or the bag on the chair. In an emergency call 112, which takes calls in English.

Where do solo travellers meet people?

In the places built for company. The show bars, mostly in Rincón de Loix and Calle Gerona, have shared tables and singalongs, and on one October night in 2026 there were 202 acts on across 57 venues. Afternoon quizzes and organised day trips help too, as you spend hours with the same faces. Hotel mealtimes work well in resort hotels. The Old Town bars are friendly, and in 2024 a regular noted several are popular with the LGBTQ community. If you arrange to meet someone, make it somewhere public and busy.

Which hotel or area suits someone on their own?

Choose location over a bargain. Solo travellers are happiest within a few minutes' walk of the bars and the beach, so a night out doesn't end with a long walk home. Rincón de Loix and the Levante end of the strip put you close to the show bars. Regulars also say it's worth paying a bit more for a good hotel that takes plenty of single guests, so you won't feel the odd one out at dinner. Our hotel rankings filter by who stays, including solo travellers.

Is a week too long on my own?

Not if you fill it. Some prefer four or five days for a first solo trip; others come back alone again and again. The Guadalest and Algar waterfalls coach trips are the most-booked days out, from about £24 to £41 in October 2026. The TRAM reaches Altea in 15 minutes, bus line 54 goes to Villajoyosa every 30 minutes, and boats run to Benidorm Island from the harbour. A day out every second or third day gives the week a shape and gives you something to talk about in the evening.

What about travelling solo as a woman?

The same rules apply: main streets at night, drink in sight, phone and bag close. In July 2026 police arrested a gang who followed older women home from the promenades in Benidorm, Altea and l'Alfàs to take gold jewellery, so leave chains and rings in the safe. If anything does happen, the SATE office on Calle Gerona at Avenida del Derramador, Rincón de Loix, is run by police with interpreters.

Is winter a good time to go solo?

It can be. Visitors going alone in January found enough open, with quieter bars and cheaper rooms: hotels averaged €78 a night in January 2026, against €103 in May. Days are mild, around 16°C, and evenings are cold. At Christmas, a hotel with a gala dinner and entertainment means company on the day itself.

What's changed lately. Visitors split between those who feel completely safe anywhere on the strip and those who avoid particular late spots; all agree the busy main roads are fine. Recorded crime in Benidorm was up 15% in the first half of 2026 on the same months of 2025, mostly theft, so the bag-and-phone habits matter more than ever.

What the regulars say

  • Walk home along the main roads, not quiet back streets, and stay close to where you spend evenings.
  • Book a couple of coach trips; a day out with the same group breaks the ice.
  • Sit at the bar rather than a table for two; it's easier to get chatting.
  • Leave jewellery and spare cards in the hotel safe.
  • Take only the cash you need for the evening.
