Then and now

A Benidorm holiday then and now: 1976 to 2026

Fifty years of Benidorm prices from old adverts and brochures, turned into today's money.

In today's money a Benidorm package costs about what it did in 1976: roughly one week of UK wages. The Times archive; Which?, Dec 2025; ONS; ONS It was cheapest in the mid-1990s. Eating out is what has changed: a family meal costs about two-thirds more than in 2016, after inflation. Post Office, 2016; Post Office, 2026

Exchange controls limited what you could spend abroad until October 1979. The limit was £300 a trip from 1970, not the £50 often remembered. TIME, 1970 A pound bought 120 pesetas.
