Can I bring my dog to Benidorm, and what are the rules?
Dear Brenda
We're retired and thinking of renting for a month or two over winter, and we can't leave our little dog behind. Will we find somewhere that takes pets? Can he go on the beach? Are there decent walks nearby? And our UK vet wants a lot of money for a health certificate: do we really need it, and what does he need to get home again?
Yes, bring him, but rent an apartment or a campsite cabin rather than a hotel: only 1 of the 50 hotels on our list takes pets, while long-stay campsites in and around Benidorm welcome small dogs and give monthly rates. He can't go on Benidorm's beaches; dogs there are a fine of up to €750 on Levante, Poniente and Mal Pas alike. For walks, local owners keep dogs on a lead in the parks and quieter streets, and the Serra Gelada headland beyond Rincón de Loix gives you proper countryside. And yes, you do need that certificate: a dog living in Great Britain needs an animal health certificate from a UK vet to enter Spain, and the same certificate covers his return to Great Britain for up to six months, plus a tapeworm treatment from a vet in Spain 1 to 5 days before you arrive home.
Who the regulars recommend
- Camping Raco, BenidormRecommended in 2024 as a great, clean site with friendly staff that takes pets; check current pet rules.
- Camping VillasolA regular stays in a cabin here a month at a time on discounted long-term rates (2023).
- The vets past Benidorm PalaceRecommended by two dog owners in 2023 as brilliant; on the opposite side of the road from the Palace.
- The pet shop near the Hotel BristolA big pet shop by the overhead walkway near the Old Town, handy for food and kit (2024); check it's still open.
- Parc de l'Aigüera and the Serra GeladaA long town park for daily walks, and headland paths for a proper outing on a lead.
Watch out for
- No dogs on Benidorm's beaches: the fine is up to €750.
- Don't rely on a vet's verbal advice about paperwork; read the GOV.UK pages yourself.
- The tapeworm treatment must be done by a vet 24 hours to 5 days before you reach Great Britain. Miss the window and he could face quarantine.
- Get 'pets allowed' in writing before you pay; some parks and blocks set their own limits.
- Carry poo bags. Some streets are notorious for owners who don't.
Can my dog go on the beach?
No. Under Benidorm's beach ordinance, a dog on the beach is a minor offence with a fine of up to €750, on Levante, Poniente and Mal Pas. A 2023 visitor asked about dog beaches and off-lead spots nearby and got no firm answer, and we haven't confirmed one ourselves, so ask your vet or the tourist office when you arrive. In town, local owners keep dogs on leads, and many small dogs are even pushed in prams.
Where can we stay with a dog for a month or two?
In a rental or on a campsite. Hotels are the hard part: only one of the 50 hotels on our list, on the Poniente side, is marked as allowing pets. Long-stay visitors recommend Camping Raco in Benidorm as clean, friendly and pet-friendly, and one regular stays at Camping Villasol a month at a time on discounted long-term rates. For a flat, ask the owner directly. Whatever you book, get 'pets allowed' in writing and check any size or number limits.
Where can we walk him?
On a lead, in the parks and the quieter streets, which is what local owners do. Parc de l'Aigüera, the long park running up from the Old Town, is a good daily loop. For a longer walk, the Serra Gelada headland beyond Rincón de Loix has paths up towards the Punta del Cavall tower; keep him on a lead and take water. There's also a walking group that leaves from Camping Villamar about twice a week from September, which is a nice way to meet people.
What paperwork does he need, there and back?
To enter Spain, a dog living in Great Britain needs an animal health certificate from a UK vet, issued no more than 10 days before you travel; a UK pet passport is no longer accepted. He also needs a microchip and an in-date rabies jab, given at least 21 days before travel. The same certificate covers his return to Great Britain for up to six months, so a winter stay of one or two months fits. Before you come home, a vet in Spain must give a tapeworm treatment between 24 hours and 5 days before you arrive. Check GOV.UK when you book, as these rules do change.
Can he come in restaurants or on the bus?
Mostly not inside. A 2023 visitor put it plainly: you can't take dogs into most restaurants, though a terrace is usually fine, and dogs aren't allowed on most public transport. Many owners who can't fly with their dog drive down instead. Benidorm suits small, calm dogs best.
Will I find a vet if he's poorly?
Yes. In 2024 a visitor counted about half a dozen vets in Benidorm, and owners recommend one up past Benidorm Palace, on the opposite side of the road. There's also a big pet shop by the overhead walkway near the Hotel Bristol, close to the Old Town, which had dog prams in 2024. Book the vet for the tapeworm treatment early in your stay, rather than in your last week.
What the regulars say
- Read the GOV.UK pet travel pages before you book; regulars say they're easy to follow.
- Get 'pets allowed' in writing from the landlord or campsite before you pay.
- Keep your dog on a lead in town; that's what local owners do.
- Book a local vet early for the tapeworm treatment rather than in your last week.
- Carry poo bags; some streets have a bad reputation for owners who don't.

Your other questions, answered
2025Is there a walking group, or a dog rescue we could help at?
Yes: a walking group leaves from Camping Villamar about twice a week, and the local dog rescue invites volunteers to walk its dogs, on Tuesdays in 2025.
2024Will I see stray dogs in Benidorm?
Rarely. Most dogs are small, on leads, and a local charity rescues and rehomes the abandoned ones.
2024Where can I get a dog pram cheaply?
A 2024 visitor saw one at the big pet shop by the overhead walkway near the Hotel Bristol, close to the Old Town.
2024A caravan park for three months with a small dog?
Camping Raco in Benidorm takes pets and was praised in 2024; Camping Villasol offers long-stay rates.
2024How do I find a vet in Benidorm?
There are about half a dozen. Owners recommend the one up past Benidorm Palace.
2023Dog walks, dog beaches and off-lead spots near Benidorm?
Benidorm's beaches are off limits. Walk on a lead in Parc de l'Aigüera or on the Serra Gelada paths, and ask a local vet about dog beaches.
2023Can't fly with the dog: is driving the answer?
Many owners do drive, or use a pet transport firm. Dogs aren't allowed on most public transport here anyway.
2022Our UK vet wants £500 for a health certificate, but a Spanish vet says we don't need one: who's right?
Your UK vet. A dog living in Great Britain needs the certificate to enter the EU; it then covers the trip home for up to six months.
