Where are the best restaurants in Benidorm?

Dear Brenda

We're in Benidorm now and everything near us seems to be quick cafés. It's my mum's 80th next week and she loves a good steak, while the rest of us fancy fish or proper tapas in the Old Town. Where would you send ten of us for her birthday meal? Do we need to book? And can we do tapas as a big group?

For your mum's 80th, book a steak house on the pedestrianised restaurant street at the Old Town end of Calle Gerona, where several steak houses sit side by side and the bigger ones can seat ten; for a smarter night, La Fachada on Levante grills aged Galician beef over charcoal. Yes, book, two or three days ahead at least: many places are small, and visitors in 2026 saw groups turned away on busy nights. Tapas works better split into twos and fours: Tapas Alley (Calle Santo Domingo) is narrow, and Gaztelutxo takes no bookings, so go before 13:30 or after 21:30. For the fish lovers, Bar Mal Pas below the Mirador takes bookings and La Mejillonera on Paseo de la Carretera is the quick-queue mussel house.

Who the regulars recommend

  • La Fachada (Levante)Aged Galician beef and charcoal grill: the smart choice for a birthday steak.
  • Country RibsA 2025 visitor rated the steak excellent and it has room for groups; check it's still open.
  • Gaztelutxo (Calle Santo Domingo)The pintxos bar Spanish reviewers rate highest; €10–20 a head, no bookings.
  • La Cava Aragonesa (Plaza de la Constitución)Pinchos and 700 wines since 1980; Repsol Solete reported May 2026.
  • Bar Mal Pas (below the Mirador)Rice and seafood with a local crowd; bookable, closed Tuesdays.
  • La Mejillonera (Paseo de la Carretera)Mussels a dozen ways at fair prices; the queue is quick.

Watch out for

  • Places with photo menus on the busiest tourist streets are where visitors are least happy; walk ten minutes on.
  • Tapas Alley gets packed through the day; small bars there can't seat ten together.
  • Rice and paella are mostly served at lunch, and many Spanish places close between lunch and dinner.
  • Some steak houses play loud music in the evening; ask for a quieter table if it's for an older guest.
What we've learned

Where's the best steak for a birthday?

The restaurant street at the Old Town end of Calle Gerona is the answer visitors give most. It's pedestrianised, with several steak houses next to Indian, Mexican and Spanish places, so a mixed group can stroll and choose. Visitors say many places there are small, but the bigger steak houses can take a group if you ring ahead. Country Ribs got a 2025 thumbs-up for an excellent steak (check it's still open). For a treat, La Fachada on Levante cooks aged Galician beef on a charcoal grill.

Do we need to book for ten?

Yes. Ring or call in two or three days ahead, and a week ahead for a Friday or Saturday. Ask for one long table and whether they do a set menu for groups, which keeps the bill simple. Visitors in 2026 warned they had seen people turned away from busy places, and rice dishes often need ordering in advance too.

Where's good for tapas in the Old Town?

Calle Santo Domingo, known to Brits as Tapas Alley, is the street everyone names. Gaztelutxo is a narrow pintxos bar where you pick at the counter, at €10 to €20 a head; it takes no bookings, so go before 13:30 or after 21:30. La Cava Aragonesa on Plaza de la Constitución has served pinchos since 1980 and was reported a Repsol Solete in May 2026. Just off the alley, a courtyard of tapas bars known as Tapas Square did six tapas and a bottle of wine for €9 in a 2026 report.

Where should the fish lovers go?

Head where Spanish diners go. Bar Mal Pas is a stone tavern below the Mirador cooking rice and seafood at €20 to €30 a head; it takes bookings and is closed on Tuesdays. La Mejillonera on Paseo de la Carretera serves mussels a dozen ways, with nearly 10,000 Google reviews and a queue that moves fast, but no bookings. Rice is a lunchtime dish at most Spanish places, so plan a paella for midday.

Is there anywhere special for a big occasion?

Yes, a short taxi or bus ride away. Malaspina, in the Mercure hotel on Poniente, has a Repsol Solete and cooks Alicante produce and aged meat over charcoal, at €30 to €60 a head. At La Cala, Strat is run by Claire Hutchings, a MasterChef UK winner. Hotel Don Pancho on Levante sells evening buffet places to non-residents, about €50 for two with a drink each in a 2025 report, which suits a group that can't agree.

What's changed lately. Visitors split between British-run steak houses near Calle Gerona and Spanish places in the Old Town, and the Old Town is winning more votes each year. Recently more of its bars have picked up Repsol Soletes, and old favourites have moved or closed, so check a place is still trading before you set your heart on it.

What the regulars say

  • Book for groups and weekend nights; the good places turn people away.
  • Order paella and other rice dishes at lunchtime.
  • Eat early or late in Tapas Alley to get a spot at the counter.
  • Walk to the pedestrianised end of Calle Gerona when the group can't agree.
  • Split a big group into fours for tapas, then meet up for a drink after.

Your other questions, answered

2026Where's good for pasta in the New Town?

The Italian places on and near the Old Town beach get the warmest words, and one right on the sand has the better view. Book, as they fill up.

2026What's the best tapas in the Old Town?

Calle Santo Domingo, Tapas Alley. Gaztelutxo for pintxos at the counter, La Cava Aragonesa on Plaza de la Constitución for pinchos and wine.

2025We're here now and can only find quick cafés. Any ideas?

Walk to the pedestrianised restaurant street at the Old Town end of Calle Gerona, or on into the Old Town itself. Both have proper sit-down restaurants within a few minutes of each other.

2025Which is the best steak house in the New Town?

Try the steak houses on the pedestrianised street at the Old Town end of Calle Gerona. For a treat, La Fachada on Levante grills aged Galician beef.

2024Where can a group of 19 eat together?

Book a bigger steak house or a hotel buffet that takes non-residents, and ask for a set menu. Tapas bars are too small for a group that size.

2024A decent Italian near the Strip for an elderly mum?

Try the Italian places near the Old Town beach, a short taxi ride from the Strip. Ask for a ground-floor table, as some terraces are up steps.

2023Any high-end restaurants worth booking?

Malaspina on Poniente (Repsol Solete), Strat at La Cala, and El Xato in La Nucía, which holds a Michelin star in the 2026 guide.
