Dear Brenda · Food, money and practical

What are the shops like in Benidorm, and where do I find things?

Dear Brenda

I always forget something, and this year it's my prescription sunglasses. Can I get a pair made up out there? I'd also like a decent pair of shoes, and my friend needs clothes in a bigger size that actually fit: is the Old Town any good, or do we need to go to Alicante? And are the market stalls worth it for cheap sunglasses?

Yes, you can get prescription sunglasses made in Benidorm: there are opticians in town, and one visitor paid €180 in 2025 for an eye test plus a pair of distance glasses and a pair of sunglasses, so take your prescription and ask how long they need. For shoes the Old Town is good enough that you needn't go to Alicante: it has a run of shoe shops, including a branded trainer store that was still open in 2024. Bigger sizes are harder; try the outdoor market and the chain stores at the La Marina shopping centres on bus line 2, and keep Alicante (TRAM, €2.90, about 80 minutes) for a proper department-store day. The market stalls are worth it for cheap and reading sunglasses, with plenty of choice at the indoor market and on the Sunday market, but they won't do a prescription.

Who the regulars recommend

  • The Old Town shoe shopsThe best run of shoe shops in town, including a branded trainer store still open in 2024; check it's still open.
  • The indoor market glasses stallRegulars' first stop for reading glasses and reading sunglasses, Monday to Saturday.
  • The Wednesday and Sunday outdoor marketMany glasses stalls at similar prices, and the widest range of cheap clothes.
  • La Marina shopping centresWhere the chain stores are, for bigger sizes and the big supermarket shop; bus line 2.
  • Ale HopRecommended by a 2024 visitor for watches and gifts; look for the cow outside.
  • CarrefourThe big supermarket for everything else, on bus line 3.

Watch out for

  • Market sunglasses are fine for fun but won't match a prescription; for eyes you rely on, use an optician.
  • Designer watches and bags on the market are copies. Buy them as copies, not as bargains.
  • Some brands size their boxes in US sizes first; check the UK or EU size on the label before you pay.
  • Smaller shops close for a few hours in the afternoon. Shop in the morning or early evening.
  • Pack spare contact lenses and enough medication; specific items can be hard to find here.
What we've learned

Where can I replace prescription glasses or sunglasses?

At an optician in town. There are several, and one 2025 visitor paid €180 for an eye test, a pair of distance glasses and a pair of sunglasses. Take your prescription or your old glasses, and ask on day one so they're ready before you leave. For reading glasses and reading sunglasses, regulars point to the stall in the indoor market and the many similar stalls on the Sunday market, at similar prices. The bazaar shops on Avenida del Mediterráneo sell cheap sunglasses and clip-on lenses, though clip-ons can be clunky.

Is the Old Town good for shoes, or should I go to Alicante?

The Old Town is good for shoes. It has a run of shoe shops, and in 2024 a visitor confirmed a branded trainer store there was still open, with other shops stocking the same brand. For one Spanish women's brand, a 2026 visitor checked the maker's website and found two official stockists in Benidorm, so look before you trek to Alicante. Smart leather men's shoes at a fair price are where Alicante comes into its own. Sandals get noticeably cheaper after the summer peak.

Where can my friend find bigger sizes?

This comes up every year, and the honest answer is that the small boutiques mostly don't stock them. The best bets are the outdoor market on Wednesday and Sunday, and the chain stores at the La Marina shopping centres past La Cala. Bus line 2 runs there from Rincón de Loix, Levante and Poniente about every 20 minutes. For a bigger range, Alicante's department stores are 80 minutes away on TRAM line 1.

Where are the big shops and supermarkets?

At La Marina, past La Cala, where most of the chains are: bus line 2, about every 20 minutes. Line 3 goes to Carrefour from the bus station, the Old Town edge and Poniente. Line 15 runs from Hotel Bali to the shopping centres hourly. For gifts, gadgets and the odd thing you've forgotten, the Ale Hop shops, with the cow outside, are a regulars' tip.

What should I bring from home anyway?

Anything personal you depend on: prescription glasses, contact lenses (unusual strengths are hard to find), regular medication and creams, and the right plug adaptors. One 2026 visitor found a cream easier to order online than to find in town. Wellies are hard to find in summer; a regular suggests cheap plastic sandals for wet days instead.

What's changed lately. Visitors agree the Old Town and the markets cover everyday needs; they split on bigger buys, with some sent to Alicante and others finding what they wanted in town. Lately more people simply order the hard-to-find thing online and have it delivered.

What the regulars say

  • See an optician on your first day, so new glasses are ready before you fly home.
  • Try the indoor market stall first for reading glasses; the Sunday market has more of the same.
  • Head to the Old Town for shoes; it has more choice than the seafront.
  • Take the line 2 bus to the La Marina shopping centres for the big chains.
  • Pack spare contact lenses and enough of any regular medication.

Your other questions, answered

2026Anywhere in the Old Town selling a particular Spanish shoe brand, or is it Alicante?

Check the brand's own website first: a 2026 visitor found two official stockists in Benidorm, which saved the trip.

2025Where can I get replacement clip-on sunglasses?

The bazaar shops on Avenida del Mediterráneo sell them. Take your glasses to try them on, as some fit badly.

2025Are novelty St Patrick's Day shirts sold in the tourist shops, or should we bring them?

The tourist shops stock them in season. If you want a particular one, bring it from home.

2024Where can I buy a decent watch?

There are jewellers across town, and a 2024 visitor suggested the Ale Hop shops. The market 'designer' watches are copies.

2024Is the trainer store in the Old Town still open?

It was in 2024, and other Old Town shoe shops stock the same brand. Check the size label, as boxes show US sizes first.

2024Where can I buy Mahou beer?

Most bars sell it, and so do many supermarkets.

2023Do any clothes shops stock plus sizes?

Few small shops do. Try the outdoor market and the chain stores at La Marina, or Alicante for a bigger range.

2023Do the cheap shoe shops sell wellies?

Not usually. Cheap plastic sandals or flip-flops do the job on wet days.
